Adopting A Pet - Five Hard Questions - Why Do You Want A Pet?

Choosing to get a pet should be for the right reasons. While these reasons will vary from person to person, there are definitely questions a prospective adopting pet parent should ask themselves.

Why?

Am I:

  • Lonely
  • Bored
  • Want to get more exercise
  • Want a companion

Those are actually terrific reasons! You want to make a positive change in your life and getting a dog or a cat (the most common adopted animals) can meet each of those wishes.

The other side of that equation though is what do you bring to the life of that animal?

Will you:

  1. Provide a safe and warm (or cool) place for your pet to sleep?
  2. Make sure your animal has fresh, clean water on a daily basis?
  3. Ensure your pet has good food and that the pet has access to food regularly?
  4. Meet the exercise needs of the pet you choose?

Animals will shed. They will have the occasional accident. There will be times the animal gets sick to its stomach. There will be days where you might not want to take that walk, or clean that litterbox, or brush out a mat of fur.

For sure the fun times with a pet will almost always outweigh the rough times. But there WILL be rough times and a prepared pet owner should know this.

Make sure you’re adopting for the right reasons for your particular situation and you’ll be a successful pet parent!
